USK Kch in Symposium 2015

For the USK Symposium 2015 in Singapore, 6 of us from USK Kuching joined them for 4 days of non-stop sketching and workshops and camaraderie (22-25 July 2015).  It was such a memorable and inspiring experience, with lots of bonding with other sketchers and meeting new friends or our online sketcher-friends for the first time.  Head over to the FB group for more reports of the symposium and memories.

Sketchcrawl - July 2015

(as reported by Jee Fong)
For this month's sketch crawl we went to the Open Air Market basically a hawker center. The building was once a Fire house before it was converted. The fire house watch tower is still intact but not accessible to the public. Imagine how tall all the other buildings were back then when this tower was the tallest point in Kuching.

Sketchcrawl - June 2015

Friends of the Sarawak Museum (FOSM) had been really supportive of our activities, always.  This time, we were invited to sketch the interiors and exhibits of the Sarawak Museum old wing.  This place has so much history, even the building and the exhibit shelves and cabinet.  We were given a brief guided tour by Louise from FOSM before sketching.

Sketchcrawl - May 2015

For May, we paid a visit to the old Chinese Chamber of Commerce, which is restored now as the Chinese History Museum.  At one point, it also served as the Chinese Courthouse, where the migrants dealt with their own businesses and affairs, during the Brooke's administration.  Since in the past, photography is not permitted in the museum, they had not been able to tell us, not to sketch inside.  Perfect!  Friends of the Sarawak Museum had also used Yvonne's sketch for their free guided tour poster.
Great turnout, with some new faces, despite the crazy weather... hot tropical sun which suddenly turned into a windy day, followed by torrential pour, and ended in sunny weather again!   We had fun nonetheless.

Sketchcrawl - April 2015

This was a sketch outing I missed, but I'm sharing the posting here from Helena's post on our FB group
Bako is a national park, and this is the jetty to that national park.  There is a quaint little settlement that supports the jetty and it's fishing trade.

Sketchcrawl - March 2015

For the 1st weekend of March, we went to record the soon-to-be demolished Dewan Tun Abdul Razak.  Locally referred to as the 'new museum wing'.  From 1973 to 1975, it served as the State Legislature complex. In 1982, the Sarawak Museum Department took over management of the building, slowly turning it into a museum exhibition gallery.  We were mainly on the grounds around the now vacant museum.

Usually, a number of us will sit in a group and ended up sketching the same scene, but with varying styles.  This is very unique to USK, because we encourage sketchers to express what they see in their own styles.
This group in the photo above ended up sketching from the Old Sarawak Museum building.  Below are our sketches.

And the other group was mainly around the Dewan, so they captured alot of the outdoor exhibits and details of carvings on the building.
