Lov Gallery

Last Friday, at Lov Gallery's opening exhibition titled "Lov Kuching", Min, Azie, Hel & I, shared our works at the gallery.  The gallery, by itself is a interesting space that exudes the charm of an old Padungan shophouse.  Viewed from the road, left of the gallery is the Batik Boutique Hotel, and right is an empty plot where the old Odeon Cinema once stood.  Here are some photos by NgeeJee from the night.

We had also agreed with Patsy Lam, the director at the gallery, to let them use our images to printed on postcards.  Fresh from the oven, she gave each of us 10 assorted postcards of our sketches.  The rest are for sale.  In a small way and for art-sake, I hope this will help fund future events and exhibitions.

Sketchcrawl November 2013

Time do pass us by really quickly... and we've missed 2 months of get-together for group Sketchcrawl.  Recently Azie came back for a week's break and nicely timed with Lov Gallery's first exhibition, "Lov Kuching".  While at the exhibition, we decided to just get together for a sketch that weekend.
Last Sunday, we went to the Sarawak Museum.  In fact, we had all sketched around the Museum grounds at different times before.

My Neighbourhood - Old Grocery Store

I often drive past this old grocery store on my way to a small supermarket in my neighbourhood past Lorong5. My husband, who grew up in this area, said that this grocery store has not changed a bit, since he was a child. True enough, one can still find 'sng-tiau' (a local version of flavoured popsicles) sold here, sweet icy delights of my childhood days.
Too lazy to go far this really hot weekend, I sat opposite it, in my car for a quick sketch & a sng-tiau after it.

Museum Grounds

Yesterday, Ms Yeo and I went to the Sarawak Museum Grounds for some quiet afternoon sketch. The weather was fantastic for outdoor sketching; sunny yet breezy. We picked a bench under a shady tree facing the old bandstand on the museum grounds and sketched.
After capturing the main subject itself, I continued working on mine while we were having ais kacang at the nearby Summer House, an old pagoda structure with added overhang that housed stalls selling local desserts like rojak, belacan beehoon, shaved ice concoctions.
We will be back for the other structures.

Grandma's House

Strictly speaking - it was Grandpa's house. Perched at the crest of Jalan Tabuan - it was my 'home' for the first 7 years of my life.

Sketch Crawl - February 2013 Update

This was our little group for February's sketch crawl; Pegs, Azie & Yen.  We wanted to experience life by the river, particularly Sungai Sarawak.  As it was also Chap Goh Mei, 15th day of the Lunar New Year celebration, a lot of us could not make it due to family commitments.  We still went ahead with the original plan.
Kuching, as we know it today, blossomed along both sides of the Sungai Sarawak riverbanks.  Today, one can still see the humble beginning of this city on the Kampung Gersik side.  While on the south banks, the godowns and shophouses that once lined the riverbanks, are now replaced by hotels, gift shops and a public waterfront park.

For RM30, we decided to take a leisurely river cruise, the traditional way ... by sampan.
At some point, we tried to sketch but found it a bit tricky with the little sampan rocking to every wave and ripply from other passing boats.
So we took some shots of the Kuching Waterfront and enjoyed the scenery instead.
Here are some of the sketches we ended up finishing.

Sketch Crawl - January 2013 Update

Just before the Lunar New Year celebration, we head over to Kenyalang Park to capture the festive mood.  Kenyalang Park is one of the earlier neighbourhoods in Kuching.  Each time this year, almost by-passing the Christmas mood, the commercial centre in this neighbourhood will be full of happenings; with blaring Chinese New Year songs, sinful yummilicious snacks and bright auspiciously coloured decorations for sale.
